The experimental/ambient/industrial music climate in San Francisco was changing rapidly at this point in 1991 and many new groups were surfacing, or splintering off older groups. The influence of the sounds of other labels and other countries artists was having a profound effect on what was happening in California. The quality of recordings increased as well due to the sudden affordability of higher quality home recording equipment.
Auricular Audio Magazine #4 was a complete San Francisco artist edition. Tel Basta was offering up their gothic ethereal pop. San Diego veteran artists Crash Worship kept serving their rhythmic tribal stomp like no one else. Nux Vomica was slowly moving into a realm of more hypnotic dark ambient soundscapes. Caroliner Rainbow splinter group the Steeple Snakes was originally meant to be a parody of the noise music scene actually turned out some compelling sonics in the process. One great feature of this release was the music of Windowpain Industries, a project by San Francisco's Steve Abbatte. The tracks were haunting, beautiful exercises that reflected his vast influences.
